On Saturday 12th May our u18s went up against Coleraine FC in the National League Cup final. Unfortunately, the lads lost 2-0 on the day. The lads played some excellent football and didn’t deserve to get beat.
The team suffered a blow when Ethan Copes got injured in the warm up and he had to be replaced at half time. The Point lads produced some excellent passages of play in the first half. Coleraine got their first goal from a corner kick just before half time. The lads were playing good football and were well in the game in the second half. They had a few great chances that may have went in on another day. Andy fox hit the crossbar when he lobbed the keeper. James Magowan missed a header from two yards out but had an excellent game in midfield and will no doubt be in the first team in the very near future. We also hit the post following a goal mouth scramble.
Coleraine scored their second goal just before the end as the lads were pushing for the equaliser. Coleraine who are a league above our u18 team, got a lot of luck on the day. The u18 managers stated, ‘While we were very disappointed with the result we couldn’t have been prouder of the boys.’
A great performance from the whole team. Liam Mathers was presented with the of MOTM award. (pictured above)
It was the last taste of youth football for many of the lads on the team. They will now continue their progress into the Under 20s and Senior ranks at the club. The cup would have been a bonus, however the lads can be happy with the successful season they have had winning the National League First Division title.
